Creating the image

Text Valley

In this example we write some text on terrain, creating ponds in rendered image.

Step 1  - Create a terrain

Create a terrain with high glaciation setting, so that you have a nice plains area where you can add the textual ponds. Higher resolution terrain gives better result when adding text. In this example, I used terrain size 1025x1025.

Step 2  - Convert terrain into TIF

Use TerraConv to convert terrain into TIF file. Then load it in your image editor. (The image editor must be capable of editing images with 16 bit color depth.)

Step 3  - Reduce contrast

First, reduce the contrast and increase brightness of the image slightly in order to make room for adding text. I adjusted the image as follows:
- decrease contrast 6%
- increase brightness 3%

Step 4  - Add text

Add black text at the plains area of the terrain. (Note that you may not be able to see the text on the nearly black background. Increase brightness on your monitor if necessary.)
Smooth the text edges somewhat in order to create more natural effect. Alternatively, you can smooth the whole image, for example using 5x5 pixel average filter.

Step 5  - Convert TIF to TER

Terrain with text added

Save the image as TIF (with no compression).
Import TIF into TerraConv.
Hit the  Restore  button to restore altitude scaling.
Save as TER.

Step 6  - Render

Load the terrain into Terragen.
Adjust water level and any other settings you like, and then render.
